Polygamous sect leader Warren Jeffs is in critical condition after being rushed to a Texas hospital on Tuesday, a prison official said. The 55-year-old convicted child rapist grew so weakened by fasting that he had to be removed from his solitary prison cell for medical treatment.

Warren Jeffs, head of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (FLDS), was sentenced to life in prison by a Texas jury Tuesday. Jeffs, who teaches his followers that polygamy brings exhalation in heaven, had been found guilty of sexually assaulting two of his underage “brides.” During the trial, Jeffs revealed threats from God in an attempt to escape conviction.
