UPDATED: It’s now known what caused a massive power outage in Bozeman early Tuesday morning that left thousands without power.

Two transmission lines experienced “weather-related issues,” causing the outage, which, at its peak left about 27,000 NorthWestern Energy customers in the dark, the power company posted on Twitter at 11:30 a.m.

Power went out across the city at around 8:25 a.m. It was restored to most areas throughout the city shortly before 10 a.m.

Wet, heavy snow began falling on the area Monday evening and continued through the night and into Tuesday morning. NorthWestern reported early on that the outage was likely due to the snow storm.

The outage stretched from Gallatin Gateway to downtown Bozeman to the Montana State University area and out 19th Avenue. Callers reported trouble at stop lights across the city during their morning commute, and shoppers at Target and WalMart said they were inside the stores when power went out. Schools were also affected.
