Bahamian runner Shaunae Miller dove past Allyson Felix of the U.S. to win gold in the women’s 400-meter finals on Monday. Felix had closed on the race-leading Miller in the final meters when the Bahamian went into a full dive to claim the gold. Jamaica’s Shericka Jackson took the bronze. By winning her seventh career medal, Felix became the most decorated U.S. woman in Olympic track & field history, passing Jackie Joyner-Kersee.

David Rudisha of Kenya dominated the field and defended his Olympic gold medal in the men’s 800-meter race on Monday. Taoufik Makhloufi of Algeria took silver. U.S. runner Clayton Murphy passed Pierre-Ambroise Bosse of France late for the bronze medal — the Americans’ first medal in the event since Johnny Gray took bronze in 1992.

Ruth Jebet of Bahrain easily won the women’s 3000-meter steeplechase on Monday morning, finishing the course in 8 minutes, 59.75 seconds — one second off the world record and more than seven seconds faster than Kenya’s Hyvin Jepkemoi. U.S athlete Emma Coburn won bronze, setting an American record and becoming the first U.S. woman to win an Olympic medal in the event.

Thiago Braz da Silva Wins Gold For Brazil

Brazilian Thiago Braz da Silva set an Olympic record in the men's pole vault, upsetting Olympic champion Renaud Lavillenie of France and winning the host nation’s second gold medal of the Rio Games late Monday. Lavillenie had set the Olympic record at 5.98 meters, but da Silva cleared the 6.03 mark to send the home crowd into a frenzy. Sam Kendricks of the United States took the bronze medal with a 5.85 vault.

Dutch Gymnast Sanne Wevers Tops Hernandez & Biles On Beam

Gymnast Sanne Wevers of the Netherlands scored an incredible 15.466 on the women’s balance beam and won the gold medal over Americans Laurie Hernandez and Simone Biles, the silver and bronze medalists, respectively. Biles’ slip on the beam following a front flip cost her deductions and her chance to win five gold medals at the Rio Games. Biles now has three gold medals and a bronze. She’s heavily favored to win the women’s floor exercise on Tuesday.

Germany Eliminates Upstart American Field Hockey Team

Germany edged out the U.S. women’s field hockey team, 2-1, on Monday to advance to the Olympic semifinals. Marie Mavers and Lisa Altenburg scored early for Germany. Katelyn Falgowski scored the Americans’ lone goal with 3:54 remaining. The U.S. defeated favored Australia and Argentina earlier in the Games. They finished last at London in 2012.
