The June 3 death of Muhammad Ali prompted an outpouring of tributes from across the cultural spectrum — including a few words from Paul Simon, who shared the news during a concert performance of "The Boxer."

As you can see in the fan-shot video above, Simon paused during the song to inform the audience that the champ was gone. "I'm sorry to tell you this in this way, but Muhammad Ali passed away," he said, resuming for the final verse with a chorus of voices from the crowd. NME reports that Simon's encore at the show, which took place at the Greek Theatre in Berkeley, Calif. on June 3, also included a performance of "The Sound of Silence" that he dedicated to Ali.

Simon is currently in the middle of a tour in support of his 13th studio album, Stranger to Stranger, which arrived in stores June 3. The U.S. portion of the tour concludes July 1 in Forest Hills, N.Y., after which Simon's currently scheduled to take a break before beginning a series of U.K. dates in November.

Simon's onetime tourmate Bob Dylan also joined the chorus of praise for Ali, penning a brief tribute that went up on his official site over the weekend. "If the measure of greatness is to gladden the heart of every human being on the face of the earth, then he truly was the greatest," wrote Dylan. "In every way he was the bravest, the kindest and the most excellent of men."
