Count on Coal Montana is a pro-coal advocacy group that has been surveying Montana residents for the past few weeks in an attempt to gauge the public’s support for the coal industry.

"There's consistently strong support for the coal industry throughout the state in all regions," said Count on Coal spokesman Chuck Denowh. "What we're asking people is if they support production and export of coal and it seems like there's consistent support. We found that 75% of people in Montana support increasing production and export of coal."

According to the survey, a majority in all age groups favored the export and extraction of coal. However, views on the issue in the southwest quadrant of Montana were the most polarized with 27% of responders showing an unfavorable view and 63% favoring extraction and export.
