Missoula emergency crews responded to the scene of an apartment complex under construction after a worker fell four stories and landed at the bottom of an elevator shaft.

Battalion Chief with the Missoula City Fire Department Steve Paske, said the call came in at about 1:15 on Tuesday afternoon from a construction site at Mount and 14th Street.

"When our crews got there they found that the gentleman had fallen about 35 to 40 feet down into the elevator shaft," Paske said. "When they arrived, the patient was still conscious and alert and complaining of pain on his left side. Coworkers were able to move the man out of the shaft, so we stabilized him and transported him to St. Patrick Hospital. The man was conscious and talking to us when we arrived, and remained conscious as he was transported."

NBC Montana reports that the 19 year-old accident victim appeared to have a broken leg, although that was not confirmed by Battalion Chief Paske.
