Early this morning, February 12, Missoula Police were called to the scene of a mysterious explosion that took place inside of an apartment building above Bernice’s Bakery.

“Officers responded just before 3 a.m. to the report of an explosion at a residence in the 200 block of South 3rd West,” said Missoula Police Detective-Sgt. Travis Welsh. “On their arrival they found a male resident who had apparently extinguished the fire with an extinguisher. He informed officers that their had been another male present that was no longer on the scene.”

The investigation has yet to determine what caused the explosion and the 46-year-old man who extinguished the fire showed no signs of severe injury. That may not hold true for the missing man though.

“We are greatly concerned about the male who did leave prior to our arrival,” Welsh said. “There are indications that he may have been injured and we are actively seeking him out.”

There’s yet another mystery involved in the explosion. According to Welsh, investigators have determined that there was a substantial gap between the time the explosion occurred and the call to 911. The call appears to have been placed by the man who was found on the scene.

The building has been evacuated due to structural integrity and safety concerns.

Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to contact Missoula Police Department Cpl. JC Denton at (406) 552-6300, or Gordy Hughes at the Missoula Fire Department; (552) 552-6210
