MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) — Officials say an AirTran flight was safely diverted to a Memphis airport after a passenger tried to open an emergency exit on the plane.

Southwest Airlines spokesman Brad Hawkins said Tuesday that AirTran flight 265 was on its way from Baltimore to Austin, Texas, Monday evening when it had to make an emergency landing in Memphis because of an unruly passenger.

The passengers were temporarily removed from them plane so officials could interview them about the incident and check the aircraft.

Hawkins said the man was turned over to authorities in Memphis. The flight, which had 119 passengers and a crew of five, resumed its trip to Austin.

It wasn't immediately known if charges would be filed. The U.S. attorney's office in Memphis declined immediate comment Tuesday.
