Authorities in western Montana say a Lolo man shot a visitor in the head Sunday morning when the visitor refused to leave and then walked toward the homeowner.

The Missoula County Sheriff's Office tells the Missoulian that the man who was shot has been taken to St. Patrick Hospital in Missoula and is in stable condition.

Sheriff's Detective Jason Johnson says the shooting reported at about 12:15 a.m. involved a 55-year-old man and a 38-year-old man.

He says the visitor pushed the homeowner to the ground. The homeowner retrieved a .22-caliber pistol and told the other man to leave.

Johnson says the visitor challenged the homeowner to shoot and stepped forward.

The homeowner fired once, striking the visitor in the forehead.

No names have been released.
