As Bozeman warms into summer, traveling salespeople are again beginning their return to our fair city. As this occurs, the Bozeman Police Department frequently receives calls with concerns regarding their legitimacy.

Some salespeople ARE legitimately selling stuff... But, even if they legitimate, there are some things YOU should keep in mind when approached.

Call the Bozeman Police Department (582-2000) for situations such as:

  • Salespeople going into the backyard or open garage of any residence
  • Salespeople who refuse to leave when asked to do so
  • Salespeople who become hostile or overly aggressive

Ask questions about their credentials and the company they are working for. Most legitimate salespeople will have some sort of documentation with them. (Ask for a birth certificate)

If you do decide to open the door to a salesperson, don’t let him or her in your home.  It is much safer to keep the contact at the door. There is no reason to let him or her inside your home.

If not interested, be courteous but firm. Some of the salespeople may use high-pressure tactics, especially if you indicate you are not interested. Being courteous and calm, but firm, has a better chance of keeping a situation from escalating.
