Governor Steve Bullock released the following statement on the proposal from the Little Shell Tribe of Chippewa Indians to remove offensive and demeaning words from the names of creeks, lakes, and other geographic features in Montana:

Governor Steve Bullock:

“Words matter and these ugly words should no longer tarnish the beautiful places that they’re attached to, or demean the history, and ongoing contributions of American Indians in Montana. It’s time that the words on our maps, reflect the values in our hearts.”

Senator John Walsh:

“In Montana, there is no room for hatred or discrimination.  Montana’s Native citizens deserve respect and we should honor their culture and history by removing insensitive names from traditional landmarks.”

Senator Jon Tester:

“Words have an impact.  They are a reflection of our values as Montanans.  The tribes of Montana are rich in culture and tradition, and the names of our creeks, rivers, mountains and valleys should reflect the honor of our tribal communities.”

Senators Tester and Walsh are also actively pushing the NFL’s Washington football team to change its name.
