Gallatin County Fairgrounds To Open Temporary Shelter
With overnight low temperatures forecast near -15 tonight and -20 tomorrow night in Bozeman, the Gallatin County Fairgrounds and the HRDC are opening a temporary homeless shelter during the cold snap.
The sub-zero temperatures are prompting the Gallatin County Fairgrounds to temporarily open one building as a warming shelter for the area's homeless.
President and CEO of Bozeman's Human Resource Development Council Jeff Rupp said Building 3 at the Fairgrounds will open from 7 PM to 7 AM, starting tonight (Thursday) and lasting through this current cold snap. Blankets and cots will be provided. However, food will not be served.
"I think this reflects where most of the community is, get them (the homeless) out of the cold, (so they can) stay warm," Rupp said. He added the fairgrounds approached him with the idea.
The HRDC has been searching for a place for a permanent homeless shelter location for months after Bozeman's Amos House closed this Summer. A deal for a shelter location near the Gallatin Valley Food Bank fell through last week.
Rupp said fairgrounds staff mentioned the possibility of a permanent location on their property as well. Rupp said he wants those staying at the shelter to show they are good neighbors before pursuing this potential opportunity further.
