Methane, a greenhouse gas, released into the atmosphere through natural gas production, cattle ranching, landfills, mining, manure management, and other natural sources, are nearly five times higher than previous estimates, according to researchers at Harvard University and several other institutions. The findings were published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Science.

The discrepancies between the recent findings and the earlier assessments have been attributed to the different ways that the estimates were determined.
