17 year-old Paul Hammerel of Condon was killed on Monday night after rolling his pickup truck on U.S. Highway 83 in the Swan Valley.

Montana Highway Patrol Trooper Rob Strauch investigated the crash that was reported just before 10:00 p.m. on Monday.

"It happened at milepost 18.5 on Highway 83 just a few miles north of Seeley Lake," Strauch said. "Two young teenagers were traveling south down towards Seeley in a 1999 Ford Ranger extended cab pickup, and the male driver drove off the left side of the road, hit a road sign, swerved back across Highway 83, then went off the right side of the road and the vehicle overturned. While the vehicle was rolling, the driver was ejected."

Strauch said neither of the teenagers were wearing seat belts,

"The passenger stated that she was asleep in the front seat, so at this point, it's yet to be determined why he drove off the side of the road. Alcohol has yet to be determined, but there are no indicators of such. Once the driver realized he had drifted off the road he tried to steer, and that's when the vehicle really went out of control,"

The Missoula County Sheriff's Office released the name on Tuesday afternoon after his family had been notified.
