Suicide bombers attacked the 1st Battalion of the National Police in what appeared to be a mission to assassinate Lt. Col. Shamil al-Jabouri. Al-Jabouri has been a prominent force in fighting the al queda presence in Iraq. While it is still unsure if al Queda was behind the attack, the loss of the lieutenant is going to be a great one for the Iraqi forces fighting terrorism. More inside.

One of the bombers entered the ground floor office of al-Jabouri, the battalion's commander, where he was sleeping on a couch, and blew himself up, killing him instantly, a police officer at the scene said.

The other bomber detonated his explosives-laden vest on the ground floor of the building shortly after the first blast, police said.

The twin explosions were so powerful that they brought the whole building down, burying the slain commander under the rubble, police said.
