MISSOULA, Mont. (AP) — An ex-University of Montana football player in state prison for rape now wants his sentence reduced over his victim's objections.

Beau Donaldson pleaded guilty last September to sexual intercourse without consent after admitting to the 2010 rape in a call monitored by police.

He was sentenced in January to 30 years in prison with 20 years suspended

Now, the Missoulian reports Donaldson wants a lighter sentence from a three-judge panel.

Donaldson's lawyer calls his sentence excessive.

However, the woman he raped told the panel "the only thing that is excessive in this case is the amount of suffering Beau has caused."

Without a reduction, Donaldson could be eligible for parole by serving 2 ½ years without incident.

Donaldson's sentence came amid concern about sexual violence at the Missoula campus.
