An 18-year-old Australian woman was attached to a suspected explosive device by an intruder with an intent to detonate it in a possible extortion attempt.

The bomb squad, cooperating with British military personnel, spent over 10 hours working with the device.

Police Commissioner Mark Murdoch stated that the situation was “unusual and difficult to deal with” and that the suspected bomb collar was “a very elaborate and sophisticated device.”

The incident unfolded in a house located in one of the most affluent neighborhoods in Sydney. The home was evacuated, along with additional residences in the immediate vicinity.

The young woman was eventually freed from the device after four officers meticulously analyzed the device and safely removed it.

Police are still searching for a suspect.
